Staggered by the emotional impact,
T'kamen seized his head with one hand, and asked painfully,

Three months after the decisive mating flight
that won T'kamen and bronze Epherineth the Weyrleadership,
the queen Shimpath has a clutch on the sands - including
a precious golden egg. But what should be cause for celebration
is only another burden on a new Weyrleader struggling to
undo the damage of his predecessor and make his own mark
on a Weyr in turmoil, and when a rider dies in suspicious
circumstances T'kamen soon realises he has a killer on his
hands.
In the dark days that follow, T'kamen will
be stretched to his physical, mental, and emotional limits,
becoming increasingly isolated from the people around him,
but no less responsible for them. Friendships will be strained,
loyalties put to the test.
And more will die....
