Weyrman Watch

'The Watch' by Chrisi S Baily

Twenty Turns before the events of the Dragonchoice trilogy, Madellon Weyr is a very different place. Fianine, the formidable Weyrwoman, has allowed Wingleader P’keo’s bronze Nathronth to fly her queen and become Weyrleader – her third in three senior flights. And with five Turns having passed since the last clutch, the boys of Madellon Weyr are even more keen than usual for a chance at Impression.

Among them is Narjol, the son of Madellon Weyr’s Chief Watchman – who, as a relative outsider to the Weyrbred lads, is regarded with suspicion by the other candidates.

But the Turn 77 is a tumultuous one, not only for Narjol and his fellow candidates, but for the senior riders of Madellon as they face a terrible reckoning.

‘Weyrman Watch’ is the result of a poll run on the Dragonchoice Facebook group before Christmas 2025. I invited our members to vote on whose Impression story they’d like to read from the five Search riders featured in Dragonchoice: Candidate.

I originally intended this to be a short story.

Whoops.

Part one

Watchman Narjol struggles to find a balance between his father’s expectations and his new duties as a candidate.

Part two

Narjol gets a chance to showcase his strengths when a respected rider attends candidate training – but then an unwelcome decision from above throws his chances of Impression into disarray.

Part three

Narjol fights for his reputation with the Weyrleaders – and Cherganth’s clutch hatches some days ahead of schedule.
